I never put my team's welfare above the individual's

People who have inner strength, inner affirmation, dont need the external affirmation associated with the winning team. Those who don't have that inner feeling depend on sports to give it to them. That, I think, is the wrong use of sports.

My father said, "Value each human being." And we did.

My first goal was to keep my job. Then I wanted to win. It was when I got more mature that I said, What's most important is that we play well.

Athletic competition as we know it produces what is called the winner and the loser in our society. Those terms certainly have different connotations that aren't good. The loser and those associated with losing sometimes feel bad, and the winners have external affirmation for the wrong reasons. There can be values learned through competition. But a total emphasis on winning versus participation is the problem.

A system would imply that we used the same offensive and defensive strategy every season. Actually, we were very flexible in our strategy, and it changed from year to year, depending on the individuals in our program, who were diverse in their weaknesses and strengths.
