Wooden Thoughts: I
continually stress to my players that all I expect from them at practice and in
the games is their maximum effort.
Be
quick without hurrying.
The
better conditioned team will probably win in the long run. Conditioning
is essential to success in basketball. We
may not be the best conditioned team in the country, but our players think they
are.
I
do not want players who do not have a keen desire to win and do not play hard
and aggressively to accomplish that objective.
Losing
is only temporary and not encompassing. You must simply study it, learn from it,
and try hard not to lose the same way again. Then you must have the self-control
to forget about it.
The
team is the star, never an individual player.
Be
more concerned with your character than your reputation.
Remember
this, the choices you make in life, make you.
The
greatest ally you have to get things working well and the players performing as
a team is the bench. Don't be afraid to use it, either for the star player or
anyone else.
It's
not what you teach, it's what you emphasize.
Nothing
will work unless you do.

ran my team pretty much like I ran my family. Only with my family, I had the greatest
co-coach working along side of me." | Hi
Coach Hi
Coach, First
up I must appologise for the HUGE gap inbetween newsletters. I must admit that
in the midst of tryouts for my junior team (U18), open scrimmages for my senior
team (Big V) and State Team tryouts starting this weekend I have been struggling
to find the time and motivation to put out the newsletter. But
I had a nice email from Coach Burns and he has motivated me to get back on to
it and get this newsletter out! To
ensure that I can stay consistent over the season I will now put the newsletter
out fortnightly which should lessen the load. Last
but not least I have added a Drill of the Fortnight section below, so keep your
eye out on that.
Drill
of the Week This
weeks newsletter marks the first Drill of the Week section. The
first drill is the Serbian Advatange/Disadvantage Transition or Serbian Transition
for short! More

Millar Legendary
coach Don Meyer thinks that Transition Defence is one critical thing young or
new coaches often neglect to spend enough time on. Your ability to defend
the fast break begins on offence, namely shot selection and floor balance. More

I have been reading fomer NBA head coach Eric Musselman's Basketball Notebook
Blog for sometime now, and I just wanted to make sure you are aware of it. I visit
it every 2-3 days to catch up and I have got to say I am never dissapointed with
the content! Check it out: http://emuss.blogspot.com/
Thoughts by Bruce
Weber 1.
Be HARD on your Best Player! Dee Brown could not make his time on their distance
running until the day before real practice started. (They were ready to start
practice without him.) 2.
Be flexible as a coach. You have to change some every year. 3.
Change daily practice or they will get stale at the end of the season. 4.
Have a winner and a loser in every drill. This teaches the kids to love winning
and hate losing. 5.
The key to weight training is consistency. (Stay on schedule) 6.
They never put their starting lineup together in practice until the day before
the game. They have equal teams in practice. 7.
They are going to do two things really well: Play Defense and run Motion Offense.
8.
They do the Mikan Drill Daily, and they have to make 40 lay-ups in a minute. |
