Selecting Your Offence

by Heath Millar

As a Coach I love incorporating sets into my playbook to ensure that at any given time I can dictate to a certain degree who will be taken the next shot and where.

As a “Motion Coach” my predominant offence is either a 3 Out 2 In High/Low attack as used by NCCA coach Bill Self from the Kansas Jay hawks or a 4 Out 1 In motion adopting many of Rick Majerus’ philosophies who achieved prominence at Utah University.

One of the first things to consider when running sets is what alignment you wish to run your sets from:

Play of the Week

Fluff

I picked this play up from Marissa Fillipou in 2007 from the Victorian U18 girls team that I was lucky enough to assist.

The set starts in a three out two in alignment 1 man picks a side and the opposite post, gets a lead foot and leads up the lane ready to receive the pass.

Goals:

I visualized where I wanted to be, what kind of player I wanted to become. I knew exactly where I wanted to go, and I focused on getting there.

Finishing Around the Rim

Practice time spent on finishing shots inside the key has traditionally been limited to under and over hand lay-ups and post moves for the big man including the drop step and the Sikma move.

Now all around the world coaches are spending time or incorporating elements of finishing into their drills. For me coaches such as Gannon Baker and his mentor Kevin Eastman have been a big influence through watching DVD's and seeing Gannon live.

Words of Wisdom

Rick Majerus implores his players to never make “cosmetic cuts.”

O’Connell head coach Joe Wootten will not run something in a game unless he has worked on it in practice.

Former NZ Tall Blacks head coach Tab Baldwin believes defensive systems should adhere to the “hand in glove” philosophy. If you are a pressure team, then you should use pressure tactics to combat screens - i.e. Trap Onball screens or switch off ball screens.

Former Pepperdine University head coach Vance Walberg who founded the dribble drive motion offence used to make his players run for shooting the mid range shot. His mantra was “we like 3’s but we love lay-ups.”

Pat Summitt has a transition element in every drill including one-on-one and two-on-two drills so her players always go from offence to defence and vice versa.

Morgan Wootten believes that there is no progress with out change, but not all change is progress.

Mike Krzyzewski suggests that when you are running your half-court offense in practice to blow the whistle and stop the action. At this point, you can check your team's spacing, and ask players who are in a screening action what they are going to do next.

The good teacher explains.

The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires."
