Introduction:
# Teach everything in three - 3 major teaching points for all drills.

Drill 1 - 1 v 1 Getting Open at Wing  

Teach cutting technique:

- Walk man & read defense, get a lead foot, change of speed

Play your man:

- Use of shot fake/drive fake, beat man on first step, create from wing

 

 
 

Drill 2 - Teach 3 x Motion offensive triggers (teach 3 v 0 then drill 3 v 3)

 

Guard to wing pass:

Basket cut & flash cut.
Same principles of cutting on both cuts - create through the cut/cut with purpose.

 

 

 

 

1 can also post cut which triggers 5 to flash high for a high low post look.

 

 

 

 

 

Guard to guard pass:

Upscreen on weakside - quickly explain screening rules o Offensive communication on screen

 

 

 

 

 

Wing to guard pass:

Backscreen out of post.

 

 

 

 

 
 Drill 3 - 5 v 0 & 5 v 5 

 

 

 

Show 5 v 0 then play it 5 v 5

Must create through the cutting and screening actions

Emphasis on dribble penetration opportunities - get to receiver spots.

1 makes guard to guard pass to 2 and basket cuts. (he finishes cut at hoops and holds his spot)

5 cuts on the back of 1s cut.

4 & 3 replace perimeter spots.

 

 

2 makes wing to guard pass to 3 and receives a back screen from 5.

 

 

 

 

4 makes a guard to guard pass and receives an up screen from 5.

3 makes a guard to wing pass and basket cuts.

2 cuts on the back of 3 to the post.

Notes:

Same rules to set up cut on all cuts, regardless of where they are on the floor Offensive communication on screening actions
Cut and screen with purpose and to create

 Drill 4 - Shell Drill Phase 1 - 4 v 4  
 

Offense to count to 10 passes, then switch over

PoE:
Beat the ball to the spot - play to the catch
JUMPING TO THE BALL - every movement of the ball triggers a movement from you
Position of feet - effective closing out
Begin to build a wall
Effective communication
Playing in a low/active stance

 

 

With dribbling:

Must dribble at least once before making a pass

PoE;
Hedging to ball when dribble comes towards you
Hedging to ball when dribble goes away
Building a wall
Staying with hedge until penetration is no longer a threat

 

 

 
Drill 5- Shell Drill Phase 2- 4 v 4  

Introduce basket cuts & post flash cuts

PoE:
Defending cutting rules - jump to ball, bump high shoulder to send them behind, full front or open up to help manage penetration
Be able to manage cutters be still be in correct position on penetration or passing actions

 
 Drill 6- Shell Drill Phase 3- 4 v 4  

Start with ball reversal, skip pass then baseline penetration

Introduce splitline help and recover rules - low split help, fill high spot and low spot

Introduce scrambling out rules - ball goes out low-low spot gets it, goes out high-high spot gets it, trapper always stays

PoE:
Importance of low splitline position
Scramble and close out to contain at all times
Aggressively rotate and scramble - uncertainty breeds errors .6 Structured Shell

 
 Drill 7- Shell Drill Phase 4 - 4 v 4  
 

Introduce defending screens in to the shell; basket cut, flash cut, back screen out of post, on ball at weak side etc

Can drill any kind of screening action here

PoE:
Being able to defend action then contain penetration as a team
Defend multiple actions at one time
Understand team defensive rules - all on same page

 
  

Conclusion

Various ways to drill Half court team defense :


Shell Drill - play to number of stops in a row
7 stops - must score to get in to defense
Plus or minus 1 to 3 - both teams have a go in defense
Drill 'Red Time' defense - ie use 24 second clock, offense can only look to score in last 7 seconds
